Oslo, Norway – September 27, 2021 – Nordic Semiconductor today announced that Beijing-based VR/AR technology company, LingYu ZhiKong (NOLO), has selected Nordic's nRF52833 Bluetooth 5.2/Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) System-on-Chip (SoC) for its "NOLO Sonic VR All-in-One" device to provide wireless connectivity. This 6-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) virtual reality (VR) all-in-one headset supports SteamVR streaming, giving users access to more than 6,000 SteamVR games, and also comes with a selection of high-quality games built-in, in addition to meeting a range of other industry needs for education and training applications.
The NOLO Sonic VR comes with a VR headset and two game controllers, all integrated with Nordic nRF52833 SoC devices. LingYu ZhiKong states that its controllers are the first VR interactive controllers equipped with a wide-frequency vibration motor, capable of simulating hundreds of realistic haptic feedback effects, and also support "real-time" heart rate monitoring (HRM). The company's proprietary "SodarTraq®" spatial positioning technology uses ultrasonic technology for precise tracking and positioning.
Nordic's nRF52833 SoC not only provides low-latency (<10ms) and low-power Bluetooth connectivity to relay data from the controller to the headset device but also offers the processing power required to support the vibration motor data handling in the controllers. The nRF52833 SoC features a 64MHz, 32-bit Arm Cortex M4 processor with a floating-point (FP) unit designed to support the typical FP and digital signal processing (DSP) computations required for high-end wireless applications like VR. Its radio architecture with an on-chip PA boasts a -95dBm RX sensitivity (in Bluetooth LE mode at 1Mbps), easily resolving connection issues between the controller and the headset while significantly extending the controller's battery life after charging.
Nordic's advanced nRF52833 multi-protocol SoC combines an Arm Cortex processor with a 2.4GHz multi-protocol radio (supporting Bluetooth 5.2, Bluetooth 5 – including 2x the air data rate (2Mbps); 4x the range, and 8x the broadcasting capability with advertising extensions (increased advertising packet payload size to 251 bytes, and improved channel selection algorithm (CSA #2) compared to Bluetooth 4.2), Thread, Zigbee, IEEE 802.15.4, and proprietary 2.4GHz RF protocol software). The nRF52833 has ample 512kB flash memory and 128kB RAM, and its dynamic multi-protocol functionality uniquely supports concurrent wireless connections for each protocol.
The nRF Connect SDK software development kit is recommended for nRF52833 software development. The nRF Connect SDK integrates the Zephyr RTOS and supports applications using Bluetooth LE, Bluetooth mesh, and Thread, and includes examples, Bluetooth LE profiles, and driver support for all peripherals. This SDK also includes Nordic's Bluetooth SoftDevice controller, which is ported from the company's proven SoftDevice for the nRF52 series. For product development, the nRF5 SDK can also be used with Nordic's Bluetooth RF protocol stacks S113, 122, and 140 SoftDevice.
NOLO CTO Zhang Jianing pointed out: "Nordic's nRF52833 SoC can meet the core processing and RF requirements without sacrificing power consumption, making it the ideal solution for NOLO Sonic VR."
"Nordic provides a complete SDK, allowing us to develop more quickly and efficiently, and launch new products faster. Nordic also offers many useful reference designs and comprehensive technical information."
