Renesas Electronics Launches RA6T2 MCU for Next-Generation Motor Control in Variable Frequency Equipment, Building Automation, and Industrial Drive Applications
The new MCU achieves higher performance and more cost-effective motor control functions with its high-frequency Arm Cortex®-M33 core, hardware accelerators, and specific feature configuration; new, easy-to-use motor control tools and kits can accelerate the design process.
Tokyo, Japan, December 8, 2021 - Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a global semiconductor solutions provider, today announced the launch of the RA6T2 MCU product group. This product offers a rich set of peripheral functions and hardware accelerators designed specifically for motor control, providing an outstanding combination of performance, functionality, and cost-effectiveness for motor control designs in home appliances, smart homes, industry, building automation, and inverter control.
Based on a 240MHz Arm Cortex®-M33 core, the new RA6T2 32-bit MCU features peripherals optimized for high-performance and precision motor control, aiming to improve performance while reducing the bill of materials (BOM) cost. For instance, two independent ADC units achieve high-speed conversion at a maximum rate of 0.16μs, including a synchronous sampling and holding function for three channels to detect the three-phase current of a motor. The product also incorporates an amplifier with gain setting according to the input voltage range and integrates external analog components such as comparators for detecting abnormal voltage inputs and overcurrents. Additionally, adjustable PWM timers make it easier to port existing algorithms. The product also offers PWM output shutdown safety features in conjunction with other analog functions for abnormal conditions. With these capabilities, the RA6T2 single chip can simultaneously control up to two brushless DC (BLDC) motors.
The embedded hardware accelerators include a Trigonometric Function Unit (TFU) and an Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter. The TFU can perform high-speed calculations without the need for lookup tables, effectively utilizing ROM. The IIR filter provides a method for setting coefficients, simplifying the porting of existing algorithms.

- PWM timers support seven complementary PWM carrier generation modes for a variety of control algorithms, with high-resolution PWM output capable of a minimum 156psec change in duty cycle
- Integrated 10-channel general-purpose timer (GPT), 2-channel asynchronous timer, and one watchdog timer
- Integrated communication interfaces: CAN FD, 2 I2C, 6 SCI, 2 SPI
- DMA controller, clock generator, on-chip oscillator, interrupt controller
- Safety features include a PWM output enable unit (which shuts off PWM output when an abnormality is detected), memory protection unit, ECC SRAM, and ADC self-test functionality

For example, one successful product combination for BLDC traction motor control includes the new RAA227063 smart gate driver optimized for motor control. Renesas has now launched more than 250 "Successful Product Combinations" for various applications and end products based on its compatible products.
Availability Information:
The 20 new RA6T2 MCUs are now available and come in five package options. Renesas Electronics also offers a wide range of design tools, including the RTK0EMA270S00020BJ motor control kit, CPU board, inverter board, and the Motor WorkBench GUI tool with real-time debugging and digital oscilloscope capabilities.
